We Are Memphis Jewish Federation

building community and providing a focal point for unified
communal action by strengthening the shared purposes and values
of Memphis' Jews. Central to the purposes and values is the
development of a community based on
gemilut chasadim -
righteousness, charity, and social justice.

In 1935, the Jewish community of Memphis, Tennessee, established the Jewish Welfare Board which had roots in the Hebrew Benevolent Society dating back to 1850. Founded as a communal fundraising body, the Fund's mandate was expanded in 1977, at which time the name was changed to Memphis Jewish Federation.

Memphis Jewish Federation serves as the central coordinating, fundraising, strategic planning and budgeting agency for the Memphis Jewish community. In partnership with the Memphis Jewish Community Center, the Memphis Jewish Home and Rehabilitation Center, Jewish Family Service, Plough Towers, Hillel of Memphis, the synagogues and schools of the Jewish community, a rich fabric of services is available for Jews and non-Jews in our city.

In addtion, Memphis Jewish Federation's fundraising dollars provide support for Jews in need in Israel and in over 60 countries around the world. Federation funds also support people in crisis situations such as after the Katrina floods, earthquakes, and other natural disasters.

In addition to its fundraising activities, the Federation provides educational programs to raise consciousness on humanitarian concerns, the Holocaust, and advocacy for the State of Israel. Events such as Campaign Opening, the annual Yom HaShoah community observance, Young Adult Division, and Lion of Judah events and missions to Israel, encourage members of the community to participate in a vibrant cultural exchange to stregthen and enhance their broader Jewish experience.

Memphis Jewish Federation Endowment Fund was established more than twenty years ago to provide philanthropic members of the community with a means to ensure that their support of Jewish life in Memphis would be perpetuated. Gifts to Memphis Jewish Federation Endowment establish a means to guarantee the future vitality of the community for generations to come.

The Lemsky Endowment Fund of Memphis Jewish Federation, established through the generosity of the late Abe Lemsky z'l, further enables Federation to build bridges strengthening the bond between Memphis and Israel through a variety of programs. The Fund provides subsidies for high school and college students to participate in summer and/or study and volunteer programs in Israel. The Fund also provides financial support for programs of interest about Israel through lecturers, performances, and Israeli emissaries brought to Memphis for the benefit of the greater community. In addition, the Lemsky Endowment provides vital funding for special projects in Israel provided through the Jewish Agency for Israel and the Joint Distribution Committee to aid new immigrants, the elderly, and Israeli populations at risk.

Memphis Jewish Federation strives to produce the resources necessary to preserve, fortify, and ameliorate Jewish life in Memphis, Israel, and throughout the world.
